Undergraduate Research Opportunities

Currently Available Opportunities

The Plant Center faculty are committed to training the next generation of scientists and professionals. Most plant science research at UGA is extramurally funded by the National Science Foundation and several other research agencies. This funding permits the Plant Center faculty to provide work experience opportunities for undergraduate students, and to mentor undergraduate students who want to participate in undergraduate research experiences.

High demand for undergraduate research experience at UGA. UGA undergraduates in biology, agriculture, forestry and related disciplines are truly exceptional and often looking for laboratory experience — generally with a long-term goal of going to medical or graduate school. The research tools and principles employed in plant genetics and molecular biology are almost identical to those used in an 'animal' lab. The Plant Center faculty are more than happy to help students achieve their career goals no matter what they are.

Plant Center faculty are very successful in undergraduate training. There are hundreds of examples of students who have worked in plant labs as a stepping stone to prepare for graduate school or a career in a medical field. There are also countless examples of students who began with an interest in medicine and changed their minds to become successful plant geneticists.

How to find a lab to work in. Begin by filling out the form below. Most of undergraduate research occurs when students work on an independent project in exchange for credit hours. A variety of courses are available to facilitate undergraduate research, depending on the needs and interests of each individual student:

Undergraduate students who engage in undergraduate research or thesis projects are encouraged to make the most of their experience and enter their results in the university-wide efforts coordinated through CURO.

In addition, many labs have funding to support undergraduate training through hourly (paid) avenues, as well as full-time summer employment. There are summer opportunities directed towards under-represented minorities, and which can be applied for through LSAMP program on campus. By mentioning plant biology or plant agriculture in their applications, students will be directed to a plant biology lab.
