LaGarde, Leniha
What brought you to UGA? I was persuaded by a recruiter at the SACNAS conference in 2023. They said I should apply to graduate school and University of Georgia should be on my list. So I applied now I am here!
What are your research/study interests? My studies of interest include medicinal plants, plant-microbial interactions and phytochemical profiling. I am currently looking into how root microbes affect the phytochemical production of medicinal plants.
What has been a benefit of being part of IPS?/How did it help you select your program? I enjoyed rotating! IPS helped me narrow down what I wanted to do and what labs I would be interested in by rotating. I feel I benefitted from it as a student coming in not really sure where I would fit in, but I have a broad realm of interest. This helped me network, learn more about campus and learn about what environments I thrive in.
What are your career goals? I am not too sure yet! I am leaning more towards academia the more I get to teach and mentor students. But I am interested in drug development via medicinal plants or even science communication in regards to bringing to light tribal/indigenous culture through plants.
Who is your major professor? Dr. Tanisha Williams
